Summer Hair Tips

Make the most of your summer and have healthy hair.

If You Wear Extensions

Wearing hair extensions in the summer usually falls into two camps: you love them because you feel and look your best for every fun event on your schedule, or you want to rip them off your head because you're a hot, sweaty mess and can't be bothered with proper home care. (Ha ha...kidding. Sort of.)

If you're a summer lover and love keeping your hair extensions all year round, it takes are a few simple precautions to keep them beautiful when things heat up. My easy tips for the beach, lake or pool:

  1. Protect your hair from the elements by getting it damp with fresh water, then coating the mids to ends with conditioner. Comb through to distribute evenly.
  2. Split your hair into two, and braid snugly, but without too much tension at the scalp area. You don't want too much pressure where your extensions are attached.
  3. Enjoy your day, in and out of the water. As soon as feasible, take out your braids, and brush through your extensions. Rinse them with fresh, clean water and condition. Let your extensions dry (naturally or blow dry,) oil your ends and enjoy your night!
  4. BONUS: BE SURE TO USE EXTENSION-SAFE SPF, AND USE A HYDRATING MASK ONCE A WEEK TO REPLENISH DRY HAIR. (HINT: I'VE GOT JUST WHAT YOU NEED!)

If You Don't Wear Extensions

I want you to feel amazing all year long, so if you prefer to go au natural for the season, we'll make a plan for removal and color, and reinstall when you're ready! In the meantime, my best advice is to continue taking care of your hair just like you would if you were wearing your extensions, following the tips we just covered.

Some things to consider:

  1. Your natural hair is more prone to damage without the protection of your extensions. You may see more breakage and split ends during this time. And your color will have the same longevity you're used to with extensions.
  2. Generally without extensions, you'll need to wash and style your hair more frequently. Make sure you're using high quality products suited for your hair type.
  3. If you've tried going without extensions thinking it would feel amazing, but you're not loving it? We can always look at putting one row back in, or other options like a halo! Extensions really are a huge confidence boost AND time saver! It's ok to love wearing them all year long!

 IT'S A PERSONAL CHOICE

I've realized over the years that sometimes I like to take my extensions out for a little while over the summer, and sometimes I don't. Most summers, I drop down to just one row so I get the benefits of wearing extensions, with less time with the blow dryer. I love that option! Last summer, I took them out for most of the season because I was battling an autoimmune flare and couldn't find the energy for anything, let alone caring for my extensions properly.

This summer, I have events and trips scheduled where I will want to look and feel my absolute best, so more than likely it will be a two row summer! I love the fact that I can style my hair fully once, and have great hair for most of the week, and when I'm in the pool or at the beach, I usually don't get underwater. I live for summer and I love having amazing hair with extensions. It can be win-win!
