How To Succeed in (Beauty) Business

It’s more than just « doing hair »

SOCIAL MEDIA HAS SHIFTED OUR INDUSTRY

You may not realize everything that goes into creating a beauty business, but it’s so much more than just ordering color and scheduling appointments. When you’re driven to create a robust beauty business in an ever changing market, you end up realizing that what worked a few years, like posting pretty hair on social media, is no longer enough.

Now, the photos and video clips have to be snappy enough to catch the attention of potential clients, but also not so aesthetically built that you don’t feel authentic. Your captions have to be smart and informational, but also relatable. Clients don’t want to be sold to, but you still need to create an enticing offer. Anything too planned and perfect can seem a little intimidating, but you still need to look like a legitimate business.

MORE ISN’T NECESSARILY BETTER

But those basics still don’t cover it all. You can then add in long form content, like blog posts and YouTube videos, so your potential guests can really dive deep and learn from and about you. You can create a podcast to share your voice with the world at large, but also don’t forget you need micro clips of everything for social promos alongside banging cover photos from Canva.

Wait!!! Make sure you’re up to date with your email list, so you can introduce yourself, your services, your philosophies, and nurture those beautiful potential relationships. And now is the time to innovate your service menu, and possibly niche down to specialize in XYZ, or create a digital course for passive income! Or start a shadowing program! Maybe hire an assistant!!! Oh, and dig out your super-sleuth capabilities when your package was signed for by someone named « Brent », and neither « Brent » nor your order is at your salon. True story, this just happened!

It’s a lot to create and sustain a beauty business today. You have to keep up with so many things, and always be ready to care for your clients at full capacity. But somewhere in there, you need to find a way to know it’s completely ok not to be doing it all (or any of it) well every day. Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. And there really is no finish line to success. I’ve found that sometimes I have to buckle down and batch some content, and other times I just let myself rest.

COMPARISON KILLS CONNECTION

It’s vital that you learn how to communicate in a way that feels authentic to you, so you can stay consistent in your message and its delivery. I love writing and creating videos, but I struggle with posting in a way that seems like it’s often enough. This is where the magic has happened for me recently. Instead of getting mad at myself and comparing my posting schedule and content to other people’s, I’ve just decided to find the joy in creating and sharing what feels good to me, on the timeline that fits where I am in my life and business.

Not only has this created a stronger connection with potential clients, but also the people who already sit in my chair. They get to see me in a truly authentic light, during their appointments as well as in my marketing. It’s also allowed me to look at different ways of connecting with my community, and cultivate relationships with other businesses in my area. I’ve allowed myself permission to chill and go with the flow. It’s funny, because I never thought I would have better results marketing my business by doing LESS of what I was taught to do! But here we are, and I am enjoying the process each day.

WHERE TO BEGIN

If you’re in the chaos bubble of being « enough » as a beauty entrepreneur, I want you to remember that you have been a successful business person prior to this moment. You’ve successfully finished your education, started a clientele, and achieved other goals that you’ve set for yourself on your journey. Give yourself the credit you deserve for that! The next thing I recommend is to write down what you are ACTUALLY doing to market yourself and your business. Are you « posting every day » or are you posting 3 times a week? Are you posting just to post, or have you thought about what a potential client might feel when they look at your social media?

From knowing where you ACTUALLY ARE in your business, you can see what things may need to shift to create better results. There is no « right » or « wrong » here. It shouldn’t always be so hard, you know? It might look different for you than for someone else, but that might just be the whole, beautiful point of being in this business today. Let’s make the absolute best of each day!

Xx, Linds
