The Great Outdoors: Life's Best Medicine

Sunshine, fresh air, and flowers make me feel ALIVE

Hello! It's finally starting to feel like Spring in Upstate NY. It is almost time to say goodbye to my sweaters for the season, and welcome back to my big, floppy sun hat!

One of the things I've noticed about struggling with autoimmune disease is how much better I feel after being outside walking. Even though I have to be sure not to overdo it, my body really responds to a gentle walk outside in the fresh air, noticing the scents and sounds all around me. I've been doing this for so long without knowing why, and I think it's really just human instinct to be outside moving when you don't feel your best.I also know now that it helps lubricate joints and keeps lymphatic fluid moving.

I've always been a nature lover, and one of my favorite things to do is sit outside to read. Do you know it's worth every book-shaped tan line?! The sun feels like it's recharging my batteries, and my brain feels calm and peaceful, listening to the birds, truly enjoying each moment of whatever book I'm reading. Honestly, I love this probably because it helps reduce cortisol levels and gives me a hit of dopamine and oxytocin.

In the evening, I love sitting on our porch with a glass of wine or cup of tea. The soothing sounds of peepers and crickets, the last of the warmth receding from the day as I cuddle into my blanket to make the most of each day. Even if it's just a few minutes, it creates such a release and calming feeling. It also forces me to slow down before bedtime, which definitely preps me for sleep. Again, managing cortisol is key here.

I think it's so important to listen to our bodies, whether we're struggling with disease or not. We were not built to be machines, working and grinding non stop. Getting in tune with my body and mind has helped me support my health in huge ways over the last decade, and I know for sure being outside is just one more key to my wellness. I encourage you to take some time to enjoy being outside, even if it's just a ten minute walk. Especially if you're dealing with health issues, you'll be surprised by how much better you will feel, at least for a little bit.

xo, linds
