FINE HAIR PROBLEMS WITH EXTENSIONS
One of the many conundrums with having fine hair is that some extensions can be too heavy to wear comfortably and safely. If the extensions are attached in a way that puts too much tension on natural hair, it can cause discomfort and possible hair loss. Adding in the weight of extensions is a consideration, as well. Whether it is the weight of the hair extensions themselves, or the weight of the attachment, i.e. keratin bonds, beads, tapes; too much weight will increase the pull on the natural hair and scalp.
A big issue for extensions on fine hair is slippage. How well the extensions STAY IN fine hair is almost as important as weight. Many women with fine hair have issues with hair ties and curls staying in their hair! Making sure added extensions and attachments stay put is vital! Another issue with fine hair and extensions is the ability for the the extensions to be well hidden. Proper placement leaving enough natural hair available to cover extensions is necessary, but so is ensuring you have a seamless color blend. So many details must be considered so that women with fine hair have a great result with their extensions!
EXPERTS IN FINE HAIR SOLUTIONS
Any scroll through social media will find a hair stylist who offers extensions. So many times, I’ve seen clients get what they thought would be the perfect solution for their fine hair—“handtied extensions.” The phrase has been thrown around as the latest type of hair extensions…but what handtied actually refers to is the type of weft that is used in creating the row of extensions. These are thin and lightweight segments of hair that are literally sewn across the top by hand to create a larger piece, called a weft.
While using handtied hair is usually what fine haired clients should look for, I think it’s more important to find a stylist who is an expert in their chosen method of extensions and fine hair. Finding an extension solution for fine hair can be a very painful and personal decision. While most stylists have good intentions when offering their services, many are not as experienced or do not continue their advanced extension education once they get their initial certification in a method. I always recommend potential clients do their research on the STYLIST as well as the method of extensions. Pretty pictures on IG doesn’t necessarily equal great results on fine hair. Clients should look for a stylist who is an expert in their niche.
ADVICE YOU CAN TRUST
So where does one begin? If you already know of some salons or stylists in your area who do extensions, that’s a great place to start. Dig into their websites and social media, let yourself dive into the digital backlog of what they’ve been doing for the past few years. Have they been jumping from brand to brand, amassing a list of certifications? That may mean they’re on the popularity train, getting in on whatever new method is coming around without necessarily mastering any of them.
Have they been sharing photos and explaining their education journey? We all start as beginners, but it’s the passion for continued progression that I find very inspiring. Just because a stylist is newer doesn’t mean they’re not reputable. I know when I first started doing NBR®, I had girls lining up to be my models because they knew I was learning and growing, and offering a killer deal. To be clear—I was not great at it at that point! But I kept practicing, learning, going to classes, and growing my skills.
THE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Why should you take advice from me? Thanks for asking—I love sharing my passion for creating beautiful, believable, natural-looking hair extension transformations, and I’ve been doing that for four years now. As a professional hair stylist since 2002, I have always worked to find ways to enhance my clients’ natural hair. Most of my girls seemed to have fine to very fine hair, so I found creative ways of cutting and coloring to add dimension and fullness to their less than luscious locks. But no matter what I did, I couldn’t give them longer, thicker, or better hair.
When I found Natural Beaded Rows Extensions in 2018, I knew I had found a solution for fine hair that would allow me to use all of the skills I had grown throughout my career, and take the transformation to the next level. Adding in rows of handtied hair (see—that magic word!) I could build length, fullness, style support and confidence for my clients. I was smitten from the first class I took (BMSCON3 in Huntington Beach, California.) I was accepted into their Mastermind program, which took me back to Orange County six more times during 2019 for continuing hands on training as well as classes in business, marketing, and sales.
As the company grew their brand and education programs, I continued on with The DKW Styling Academy, where I spent a VERY grueling year of submitting assignments on models, receiving feedback on my work, and course correcting any issues that needed improvement. I am very proud to tell you that I was one of the very first officially Licensed NBR® Artists in the country, and am still the only one in the Northeast of the US. I take your experience very personally, because it is a reflection of all the work I’ve put in to get to this point as an artist. Even if I am not your personal stylist, I want you to have an amazing experience with hair extensions!
I hope this helps guide you in your search for your perfect extension solution for fine hair. If you have any questions or topics you’d like me to share about, please let me know in the comments. You can find out more about my journey with NBR® here or visit my salon website here.
